| Murchison
Falls National Park |
Uganda's largest national park protects achunk of untamed African
savannahbisected by the mighty river Nile. It isnamed for the
dramatic Murchison Falls,where the world's longest river explodesviolently
through a narrow cleft in the RiftValley escarpment to plunge
into afrothing pool 43m below. Wildlifepopulations have largely
recovered fromthe poaching of the 1980s; in the lushborassus grassland
to the north of theNile, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and avariety
of antelope are regularlyencountered on game drives, while lionare
seen with increasing frequency. In thesoutheast, Rabongo Forest
is home tochimps and other rainforest creatures.The Nile itself
hosts one of Africa'sdensest hippo and crocodile populations,and
a dazzling variety of waterbirdsincluding the world's most accessible
wildpopulation of the rare shoebill stork.

Getting there:
A days drive From Kampala, with a possible overnight stay at Masindi
Public transport available to Masindi; taxis from there to the
park.
What to do:
regular launch trips to the base of the falls offer fine re-viewing
a birdwatching Boat trips to the Lake Albert-delta provide the
best chance in Africa of sighting Chablis. Chimp tracking at Rabongo
Forest, and en route from Masindi in the Budongo, Forest. Game
a drive on good network of roads.
When to visit:
Any time of year.
Accommodation:
Two upmarket lodges and a luxury tented camp. Simple but comfortable
chalets. Camping is permitted in selected spots.
