Wildlife Reserve |
Only
recently developed for tourism, thereserve protects a network
of forest-fringedwetlands along the Katonga River. Bestexplored
on foot and by canoe, Katonga supports some 40 mammal and at least150
bird species, many specific to wetlandhabitats. Most visible are
elephant,waterbuck, reedbuck, colobus monkeysand river otter.
This is one of the bestplaces in Africa to look for the elusivesitatunga,
a semi-aquatic antelope withwebbed hooves that forages almostexclusively
in swamps.

Getting there:
Katonga is threehours from Kampala, branchingFrom the Fort Portal
or MbararaRoad. Buses also connectKampala to Kabagole, a shortcanoe
ride and walk from theentrance Rate.
